 Peace DoveThe Dove

A dove and a blackbird watched snow fall on a branch.

The blackbird said the snowflakes fall and fall with no significance or meaning.

The dove said each snowflake is unique and important. The dove said "just watch that branch as the snowflakes fall on it." The blackbird was about to fly away and comment nothing is happening when a snowflake landed on the accumulated snow resulting in a thunderous snap. To the blackbird's surprise, the branch broke from the weight of one additional snowflake.

The dove then  observed that perhaps all that is needed for world peace is for one more person to stand up for it.

Dear Member,

I have been carefully tracking the march to war with Iran. Today, I am happy to announce that peacemakers are making a difference. As a result of our efforts, the Bush administration is now seeking to establish a diplomatic presence in Tehran. This is the biggest step toward peace since the Iran Hostage crisis almost 30 years ago!

Combined with the talks occurring today in Geneva, we are witnessing a major turning point in the march to war with Iran. In Geneva we see the first public negotiations at senior levels of government. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs William Burns is presenting terms to include a U.S. diplomatic presence in Tehran!

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, said Iran could respond favorably to the latest deal offered. Financial markets are responding with the price of a barrel of oil dropping over $16.

Adding to the pressure for peace, polls increasingly show that many Americans have woken up to the fact that Bush/Cheney have been actively planning to attack Iran. With vigilance and hard work, continued peace with Iran is possible.

Peacemakers are sometimes discouraged by the fact that pro-war forces have more money. Never underestimate the power of the peacemaker. Peacemakers are points of light that illuminate the truth. Consider the analogy that trying to make a room dark is difficult and a single person with a candle can light up a room.

Keep hope, peacemaker efforts helped prevent war with Iran in July/August 2006 and in January 2008 (see the Articles section for additional information on these events).
Is a strike on Iran still possible?
Eleanor RooseveltEleanor Roosevelt once said "you gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face...You must do the thing you think you cannot do."

There is the possibility that the Bush administration is insincere about establishing a diplomatic presence in Iran. The recent steps back from war could be part of a media campaign that will end the day after the November presidential elections. The recent progress could be another Bush deception similar to the nonsense that the Iraq War is going so well that US troops will soon be withdrawn.  Perhaps Bush feels he needs some short-term good news to offset the July 8th World War III warning from Russia. Specifically, Russia threaten to use military force to prevent the expansion of the US missile shield.

Until the massive buildup of US forces currently surrounding Iran ends, peacemakers must continue to call for peace with Iran and we recommend the three below actions.

1. Contact your representatives in Congress to oppose House Congressional Resolution 362.

Resolution 362 cosponsored by 102 House Democrats and 117 Republicans will reverse the positive steps in Geneva. The resolution demands President Bush "initiate an international effort" to impose a land, sea, and air blockade on Iran to prevent it from importing gasoline and to inspect all cargo entering or leaving Iran. To stress how quickly the recent progress would be erased, imagine if Iran passed a similar resolution against the US.

2. Call into radio talk shows and write letters to the editor of newspapers.

3. Stand up for peace with a visible presence in a busy location where you live. Proactively taking action to raise awareness and stand for peace puts pressure on the Bush administration.

For more information, the Teach Peace Foundation March to War timeline is kept updated with the supporting details. Only a few days ago the latest additions to the timeline reinforced war was on the horizon (e.g., Seymour Hersh's report that the US is conducting covert attacks in Iran funded with $400 million by a Democratic led Congress).

By completing one or more of the above actions, you will become part of a peace success victory preventing what could spin out of control and lead to World War III.
Another Peace Milestone
On July 11th, South Korean President Lee Myungbak extended an olive branch and proposed to restart bilateral reconciliation discussions with North Korea.

This major peace milestone was preceded by the recent dismantling of the Yongbyon nuclear reactor. In late June 2008 imagines of the destroyed Yongbyon cooling tower were broadcast around the world.

A peaceful unification in Korea is long overdue and efforts by peacemakers are making it increasingly possible.
Marketing 101: Pro-peace vs. Anti-war
Something to think aboutWhat is the difference between being for peace and being against war?

Mother Theresa's (1910 - 1997) once said, "all works of love are works of peace." She was once asked why she did not participate in anti-war demonstrations and replied "I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I'll be there."

While the Teach Peace Foundation applauds both anti-war and pro-peace acts of love, we highlight the power of being for something.

In marketing it is critical to think about how the message you send is received by your audience. When communicating with a person who is unsure or even supportive of the war, the distinction between a pro-peace vs. anti-war message can mean between success and failure.

Almost everyone is for peace. Soldiers are often quick to tell you they serve in the military because they are peacekeepers. A much smaller portion of the population sees themselves as anti-war. By framing the discussion on common ground, you are much more likely to connect with your audience.

A more peaceful world is the guaranteed outcome when we teach peace.
Sincerely, Dave Dionisi
